ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A composite article is disclosed for treating molten iron. The article has a porosity ranging from about 25 to about 50 percent and comprises a mixture of a plurality of magnesium particles, said particles having a particle size of less than about 5 mm; at least one additive component selected from the group consisting of magnesia, zirconia, titania, graphite, coke and charcoal; and at least one binder therefor selected from the group consisting of clay, bentonite, resins, cellulosic type binder and water-soluble silicic acid.
