The present invention relates to apparatus and methods for stabilizing and, or maintaining adjacent bone portions in predetermined desired relationships and for constraining one, two or three-dimensional motion or rotation of the adjacent bone portions. More particularly, the present invention relates to magnetic apparatus with at least two magnetic arrays (400, and 500), each including magnets (402A, 402B and 502) arranged in a predetermined manner and each magnetic array (400 and 500) generating a magnetic field therearound. Once implanted and secured to the adjacent bone portions, the apparatus provides interacting magnetic fields in the area of the bone portions and transduces magnetic energy into mechanical energy and/or mechanical energy into potential magnetic energy, thereby reproducing functionally anatomic and/or anatomically advantageous arrangement of the bone portions. The present invention also relates to orthopedic prosthesis including magnetic arrays to constrain relative motion between the adjacent bone portions in various dimensions.
L'invention concerne un appareil et des procédés destinés à stabiliser et/ou à maintenir des parties osseuses contiguës dans des relations voulues prédéterminées et à restreindre le mouvement ou la rotation à une, deux ou trois dimensions de ces parties. Plus précisément, l'invention concerne un appareil magnétique ayant au moins deux réseaux magnétiques (400 & 500), chacun comprenant des aimants (402A, 402B & 502) disposés d'une façon prédéterminée et chaque réseau (400 & 500) générant tout autour un champ magnétique. Une fois implanté et fixé aux parties osseuses contiguës, l'appareil produit des champs magnétiques interdépendants dans la zone desdites parties ainsi qu'une transduction de l'énergie magnétique en énergie mécanique et/ou de l'énergie mécanique en énergie magnétique potentielle, ce qui permet de reproduire un agencement fonctionnellement anatomique et/ou anatomiquement avantageux desdites parties osseuses. L'invention concerne en outre les prothèse orthopédiques comportant des réseaux magnétiques pour restreindre le mouvement relatif entre les parties osseuses contiguës dans différentes dimensions.
