ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improvement in an active bearing electromagnet having a ferromagnetic rotating part called rotor and a stationary ferromagnetic body called stator having power windings powered by electrical currents from a power amplifier. A sensor winding on the stator provides a voltage to a low pass and high pass filter. A reference inductor external to the magnetic bearing also includes a power winding and sensor winding. Voltage induced in the reference winding is rectified and compared with the filtered and rectified voltage from the sensor winding to produce a representation of a dimension of the air gap of the magnet. A further improvement provides the velocity and force across the air gap in the magnetic bearing. A compensation circuit is supplied that establishes the magnetomotive force of the bearing electromagnetic path. The low frequency component of the compensating current and the induced voltage in the bearing electromagnet may be used to calculate the velocity of the rotor displacement and the force of the displacement.
