ABSTRACT A data storage cartridge has a single reel around which is wound a length of magnetic recording tape. Attached to the lead end of the tape is a cylindrical ferrule which is disposed such that its bore is accessible from below. The cartridge is used in a spiral recorder/player which includes a carrier having a raised position and a lowered position. In the raised posi- tion the carrier receives the cartridge through a feed slot in the player housing. When the carrier is lowered a pin to which is attached an end of a leader tape mates with and is latched to the ferrule. The other end of the leader is attached to a takeup reel and in this way the tape may be driven by a motor past read/write heads. Damage to guides, recording heads, idlers, etc. by the ferrule as it is drawn thereacross is avoided by providing cam rings on the guides, idlers and recording head assembly. These cam rings engage the ferrule and lift it out of the path of the various components mentioned above.
