A magnetic data tag and tag reading system, the tag comprising a plurality of magnetic layers which are arranged so that data can be stored by the relative orientation of their easy axes. A tag reader is described together with a data coding system which provides for the data to be read in any tag orientation, so that the system can be used as a replacement for optical bar code labelling systems.
