ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a magnetic scrap sorter for detecting ferromagnetics in a mass of basically non- ferromagnetic material. The apparatus includes a magnetic search coil located within a magnetic field having a sub- stantially constant level with means to respond to signals generated by the search coil resulting from ferromagnetics passing through the search area of the search coil. The method has particular application to the detection of ferro- magnetic impurities in titanium scrap.
