The invention relates to the projection of magnetic gradient fields for use in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The projection of a gradient outside of a field generating assembly allows imaging of samples which will not physically fit inside the coil confines. An apparatus and method for improving the linearity of the projected gradient field are disclosed. This is achieved by arranging the position of the magnetic field generating coil conductors such that the second derivative of a gradient component is equal to zero. In one practical example the linearity is improved by providing a first circular coil which is positioned so that its centre is offset along the axis of the field generating coil assembly by a distance equal to half the radius of the coil. In another example a pair of current carrying wires are selectively positioned offset from a region of interest.
L'invention concerne la projection de champs de gradient magnétique destinés à s'utiliser pour une imagerie par résonance magnétique. La projection d'un gradient à l'extérieur d'un ensemble de génération de champ permet de former des images d'échantillons ne tenant pas physiquement dans les limites de la bobine. L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé d'amélioration de la linéarité du champ de gradient projeté. On effectue cette opération en disposant les conducteurs de la bobine de génération de champ magnétique de sorte que la deuxième dérivée d'un composant de gradient soit égale à zéro. Dans un exemple pratique, on améliore la linéarité en disposant une première bobine circulaire de telle sorte que son centre soit décalé le long de l'axe de l'ensemble bobine de génération de champ d'une distance égale à la moitié du rayon de la bobine. Dans un autre exemple, on décale sélectivement deux fils conducteurs de courant d'une zone intéressante.
