A system for locating objects in space, such as medical instruments (16) within the body of a patient (P), based upon transmission of magnetic fields from coils (10) in a fixed frame of reference to sensors (20, 22, 24) on the object or vice-versa. The current supplied to the coils is adjusted to assure that the sensors receive fields within a preselected range of magnitudes regardless of the location of the object in space. This assures that the sensor operates within its optimum range, and permits use of compact transmitters and sensors.
Un système de localisation d'objets dans l'espace, tels que des instruments médicaux (16) dans le corps d'un patient (P), se base sur la transmission de champs magnétiques provenant de bobines (10) placées dans un cadre fixe de référence, ces champs magnétiques étant envoyés à des détecteurs (20, 22, 24) se trouvant sur l'objet, ou vice versa. Le courant fourni aux bobines est réglé pour s'assurer que les détecteurs reçoivent les champs dans une plage présélectionnée d'intensité indépendamment de la position de l'objet dans l'espace. Ceci permet de s'assurer que le détecteur fonctionne à l'intérieur de sa plage optimale, et donc d'utiliser des émetteurs et des détecteurs compacts.
