MAGNETIC MEMBER DETECTOR WITH COMPENSATION FOR PROXIMATE FERROMAGNETIC MEMBER ABSTRACT A detector for detecting a moving ferromagnetic member irrespective of its speed. An output signal is produced by a bi-stable ferromagnetic device which is pulsed between its stable states in a zero flux field between the faces of pole pieces, when no member is present. Moveable soft iron pole pieces are provided for convenient flux adjustment to compensate for flux distortion due to nearby magnetic structures. The presence of the moving ferromagnetic member introduces a net flux between the pole faces and terminates output signals. A timing circuit is provided to assure member presence before a signal is given and a further timing circuit assures that a member present signal is maintained for a predetermined minimum duration irrespective of member speed. A typical application is to detect wheels of a moving train.
