ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A magnetic recording medium is formed by disposing on a substrate a magnetic recording layer comprising a vertically magnetizable film of Co alone or a Co alloy, or Fe alone or a ferromagnetic Fe alloy. The lubricity, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the magnetic recording medium are improved by forming an upper layer of Co oxide on the magnetic recording layer. The upper layer per se can be a magnetizable film, particularly a verti- cally magnetizable film.
