ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed herein is a magnetic recording medium having a thin film of ferromagnetic metal layer formed by physical vapour deposition which has a high coercive force and an improved S/N ratio. The magnetic recording medium comprises a nonmagnetic substrate and a ferromagnetic layer formed on the substrate formed by physical vapour deposition, wherein the ferromagnetic layer is made of ferromagnetic metal element and nonmagnetic metal element, and the nonmagnetic metal element is distributed in ferromagnetic layer with a concentration higher in a substrate side of the layer than in a surface side of the layer. In another aspect of the invention, the ferromagnetic layer is formed of ferromagnetic metal element, nonmagnetic metal element and oxygen, and the nonmagnetic metal element is distributed in the ferromagnetic layer with a concentration higher in a substrate side of the layer than in a surface side of the layer, and furthermore the oxygen is distributed in the ferromagnetic layer with a concentration distribution similar to that of the nonmagnetic metal element.
