The invention prevents illegal use of information contents by embedding contents management information in a magnetic recording medium. In a region for embedding track identification (ID) of a magnetic recording medium, a pattern corresponding to copy management information, i.e. a type of contents management information, is embedded as well as a pattern corresponding to track ID, the track ID being a code unique to each track. The pattern of copy management information is set for every track by classification using, for example, a Gray code.
