ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE Disclosed herein is a rotary pulse generator for use with an ignition system including first and second thyristor which control the production of separate ignition sparks, which rotary pulse generator comprises a stationary magnet for producing lines of flux, a trigger coil associated with the magnet so that the lines of flux pass through the coil, the coil having opposite ends each respectively connected to one of the thyristors, a pole piece extending from the magnet through the trigger coil for guiding the lines of flux through the coil, and a rotor including a peripheral surface extending adjacent the pole piece to define an air gap extending therebetween, the peripheral surface including a major surface defining a semicircular arc having a major radius and a minor surface defining a semi-circular arc having a minor radius smaller than the major radius so that, as the rotor rotates, the width of the air gap alternately changes from a generally constant first distance to a generally constant second distance different from the first distance, whereby the path of the lines of flux abruptly changes as the rotor rotates so that the r-rigger coil produces a pair of spaced voltage pulses of opposite polarity to alternately fire the first and second thyristors substantially every 180 degrees of rotation of the rotor.
