MAGNETIC SAFETY INTERLOCK FOR A FOOD PROCESSOR UTILIZING VERTICALLY ORIENTED, QUADRANT CODED MAGNETS Inventor: Allen F. Podell ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Improved safety interlock method and apparatus are provided for a food processor of the type having a base housing enclosing a motor drive, a working bowl which is detachably mountable on the base housing in position for receiving various rotatable food processing tools which are removably installed on a tool drive in the bowl, and a removable cover on the bowl. Food processors of this type generally include a control system for preventing actuation of the relatively powerful motor drive, so that the food processing tool does not rotate, unless two conditions have been met, namely: (1) the bowl is mounted in its operating position on the base housing, and (2) the cover is held securely in its operating position on the bowl. The improved safety interlock provided in one embodiment of the invention uses two permanent magnets. One magnet is associated with actuator means and the other magnet is associated with switch means which prevent operation of the motor unless actuated. These two magnets are oriented generally in vertical planes relative to the horizontal top deck of the base housing. Each magnet is divided or coded into respective polarity quadrants arranged so that the magnetic polarities of the quadrants of each of these magnets are non-symmetrical with respect to mutually perpendicular axis. The magnet associated with the switch means is movably mounted within the base housing. The actuator magnet is external to the base housing, its position relative to the base housing being determined by the position of the bowl on the base housing and also by the position of the cover on the bowl. The two magnets are arranged so that the control for the motor drive of the food processor can only be magnetically actuated when both the bowl and the cover are mounted securely in their respective predetermined operating positions.
