ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The magnetic system determines a heading or trajectory pointing toward a fixed or moving magnetic object. At least p independent components of the gradient of the magnetic field are measured in the vicinity of a moving vehicle, p being an integer equal to the number of dimensions of the space in which the moving vehicle is displaced. Then, a scalar criterion, function of the measured components of the magnetic field gradient, is used to determine the direction in which the magnetic object is located, which direction being that for which this criterion is at a maximum. The moving vehicle can then be displaced in the direction determined by the maximum of the above criterion, to find the magnetic object. The magnetic system is particularly adapted for seeking objects or persons such as skiers lost in an avalanche.
