ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A magnetic system for supporting and propelling a vehicle along a roadway. The system includes a stator member provided along the roadway and comprising a plurality of lami- nations of a ferromagnetic material. An energizing winding for producing a travelling magnetic field is located in a plurality of transverse slots in the ferromagnetic material. A plurality of permanent magnets are mounted along the vehicle below the stator member such that an air-gap between the upper pole faces of the permanent magnets and the lower sur- face of the stator member is defined. Spacing between the permanent magnets is adjusted to spacing between the slots as to define a synchronous linear induction motor. In preferred embodiments, wheels or electro-magnets maintain an air-gap space between the roadway and the vehicle.
