ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is provided a miniature magnetic tape cassette recorder having a sensor for sensing input elements provided in the cassette such that the tape drive can be switched between at least two different tape speeds by a control circuit. The input elements provide for programming the cassettes for a selected normal tape speed and for programming to a higher normal tape speed in accordance with programmed cassettes so that fast wind and fast rewind speeds can be selected together with an increased forward and reverse monitor speed. Associated switching means and circuitry are provided to accomplish the foregoing.
