ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fibre optic magnetic sensor is comprised of a thin waled cylindrical shell or barrel, the mid-portion of which is elastically, radially deformable, about which a single mode optical fibre is wound, a magnetostrictive element secured to at least one end of the barrel for applying axial forces to the barrel in response to changes in the magnetic field in the vicinity of the transducer, the axial forces thus applied to the barrel cause the midportion of the barrel to deform radially and thereby induce in the optical fibre a magnetic field strength related strain.
