Magnetic type shunt harmonic filters of 3-phase type and single phase type consisting of a core and coils are applicable for 3-phase 3-wire, 3- phase 4-wire, and single phase electrical power systems regardless of the voltage level. This filter can block the power frequency currents and create a low impedance path for all harmonics when a net zero flux is produced. A negative power frequency voltage (opposed to the phase voltage) in series with phase voltage is used to block the flow of power frequency current. Power frequency voltage without harmonics is obtained by use of a power frequency filter in series with a one to one ratio transformer. Harmonic filters for achieving less circuit impedance may omit the iron- core, but must contain an air-type or iron-core type coil working as an inductor and keep the connection the same, or omit both iron-core and coils with the negative power frequency voltages connected to phase directly. Alternatively, a single phase harmonic filter may have three legs and three coils.
