A magnetically actuated fluid motor has a shiftable member (94) having valve members for alternately closing one and opening the other of the large (44) and smaller face (46) of a stepped piston (42) reciprocating in a housing (12), the shiftable member carrying a magnet (100) and being shiftable to collocate the magnet with one of spaced apart magnet attractors (102, 104). When the magnet is collocated with a magnetic attractor, the magnetic holding force exceeds simultaneous resilient force supplied by spring members (105, 107) operating on the shiftable member. Stored energy in the compressed springs is released to shift the shiftable member only after the magnetic holding force is weakened by application of a separating force applied through stops which arrest the shiftable member while the piston continues to move without immediately opening the closed face of the piston.
