A magnetic coupling (50) for toy vehicles (80) includes a stationary protruding member (52) and a retractable member (58), each having a rounded end piece (56, 60). One of the end pieces (56, 60) is at least partially formed of a magnetic material and the other (56, 60) is at least partially formed of a non-magnetic, magnetically attractive material. A separate end piece (56, 60) can be provided on each of a pair of toy vehicles (80) or each vehicle (80) can be provided with both. A retractable member (258) can be configured to receive the protruding member (252) in a mechanical coupling (250).
