- 1 - Abstract A magneto-optical recording medium that records, reproduces and erases signals with a laser beam having a wavelength of 600 nm or less consists of a substrate and a magneto-optical layer including at least one layer consisting of four sublayers of the structure: [Xa/Co/Xa/Ya], in which Xa is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Pd and Pt, and Ya is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Cu and Au. The result is a medium with a high vertical magnetic anisotropy energy and a large Kerr rotation angle at the desired wavelength.
