ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A ceramic-metal composite suitable for use in a high- temperature environment consists of a refractory ceramic matrix containing 10 to 50 volume percent of a continuous high-temperature metal reinforcement. In a specific appli- cation of the composite, as an electrode in a magnetohydro- dynamic generator, the one surface of the electrode which contacts the MHD fluid may have a layer of varying thickness of nonreinforced refractory ceramic for electrode tempera- ture control. The side walls of the electrode may be coated with a refractory ceramic insulator. Also described is an electrode-insulator system for a MHD channel.
