31 ABSTRACT In accordance with the present invention, there are provided magnetooptical recording media having a substrate and thereon at least a magnetooptical recording layer and a protective layer, in which the surface of the protective layer has been roughened, in the circumferential direction and a process for the preparation thereof. When information is stored in the magnetooptical recording media thus provided using a floating type magnetic head, it is found that the magnetic head is excellent in floatability.
