ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A magnetoresistive (MR) card-reading head comprises a sapphire substrate with MR strips vapour-deposited on one of its faces. The substrate is mounted in a holder so that the opposite face thereof is urged into face-to-face contact with magnetically-encoded cards which are passed through an adjacent guideway, the information on the cards thus being read through the thickness of the substrate. This construction is particularly useful in the provision of MR strips of crooked configuration, such as are required in high-security readers for access- control equipment.
