A method for processing postal items with a sorting machine using a code printed on each item that can be read by a machine. According to said method, a mail item on its first pass through the machine undergoes the following: a digital image is of the surface of the mail item is formed (9), and from the image , a digital fingerprint (Vid) is made (12) characterizing the mail item as well as the sorting information and in recording (13) said digital fingerprint (Vid) in a memory in correspondence with the bar code (idTag, CAI) printed on the mail item. While the mail item is on its second pass through the machine, the method consists in reading the printed bar code that is printed on the mail item, and, if it has not been possible to extract completely the information contained in the printed code read off the mail item, in using said correspondence in the memory between the printed code that is printed on the mail item and the digital fingerprint that characterizes the mail item to continue machine-sorting the mail item, thereby contributing to reducing the error rate. The printed bar code that is printed on the mail item may be a mail item identity code, a customer applied identifier (CAI), or a sorting code for outward and/or inward sorting.

Un procédé de traitement d'envois postaux dans une machine de tri utilisant un code imprimé sur chaque envoi postal et lisible par machine, comprend au premier passage d'un envoi postal en machine les étapes suivantes: on forme (9) une image numérique de la surface de l'envoi postal, on dérive (12) de l'image une empreinte numérique (Vid) caractérisant l'envoi postal ainsi que des informations de tri et on enregistre (13) en mémoire ladite empreinte numérique (Vid) en correspondance avec le code barres (idTag,CAI) imprimé sur l'envoi postal et les informations de tri et on trie l'envoi dans une sortie de tri de la machine é partir des informations de tri. Pour améliorer la lecture du code barres sur l'envoi lors de son second passage en machine, le procédé comprend les étapes suivantes: on lit le code barres imprimé sur l'envoi postal et si l'information contenue dans le code barres lu sur l'envoi postal n'a pas pu être extraite complètement, on exploite cette correspondance en mémoire du code barres imprimé sur l'envoi postal et de l'empreinte numérique caractérisant l'envoi postal pour poursuivre le tri machine de l'envoi postal. Le code barres imprimé sur l'envoi postal peut être un code d'identification d'envoi (Idtag), un code client étendu (CAI) ou encore un code de tri- acheminement et distribution.
