Abstract Lighting equipment (10) independent of the mains is described which comprises a solar panel (12), a chargeable battery (14) coupled to the solar panel (12), a light source (18) coupled to the battery (14), switching equipment (16) inserted between the battery (14) and the light source (18), and a light sensor (20) connected to the switching equipment (16). An AND gate (28) is inserted between the switching equipment (16) and the light sensor (20), the output (30) of this AND gate being connected to the switching equipment (16), its one input (24) connected to the light sensor (20) through an inverter (23) and its second input (26) connected to a second sensor (22) which may be an improved sensor. The switching equipment (16) has a time switch (40) which establishes the electrically conductive connection between the battery (14) and the light source (18) for a predetermined period of time when the improved sensor is activated and when the light sensor determines that darkness has fallen.
