Membranes immersed in water are cleaned by (a) stopping permeation, (b) flowing a chemical cleaner through the membranes in a direction opposite to the direction in which permeate passes through the membrane, and (c) resuming permeation, wherein chemical cleaner remains substantially undiluted in an area adjacent the membranes and no agitation is provided in this area. The chemical cleaner is preferably applied in pulses over a period of time. The total amount of chemical cleaner used, however, is small. In an embodiment, the chemical cleaner is heated water. The cleaning events are repeated between twice per day and once a week to reduce the rate of loss of permeability in the membranes over time.
