A method of making a tire having a precisely located applique and optionally scuff ribs to protect the applique. The applique preferably is applied to a green tire case on a tire building drum and placed in curing mold and cured without disfiguring the applique or obtain substantial rejects or blemishes. The mold preferably contains grooves to produce scuff ribs in the tire at least under the applique. This method uses an applique formed of a non-staining film, preferably of an acetate or polyester film or related film, printed with a rubberized ink with the ink printed pattern being adhered to a non-staining compatible rubber backing or gum strips, said strips being essentially virgin rubber free of staining compounds. The backing is stitched to the green tire case, preferably after being located thereon at the place indicated by lights relative to the center line and then cured in mold having grooves therein to produce specific scuff ribs on tires at least where the applique is located. Another embodiment of this invention comprises utilization of a special mold having grooves therein to mold scuff ribs in an area where the applique on the green tire case will rest in the mold to yield a cured tire whose applique has scuff ribs or bars molded beneath the surface of the applique to allow part of the applique to be abraded off over the scuff ribs to leave the applique with a pleasing appearance. Also, this invention is useful in marking products with a bar code which is protected from partial abrasion away of the code and still be readable.
