ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention concerns the making of articles from metallic powder of tool steel, alloy steel or stainless steel. By the invention, powder, preferably made by steam, gas or water atomisation with water quenching, is compacted to form a compact of 70 to 92% relative density. The powder is deoxidised in the compact form combined in a single heating cycle with a sintering step. This allows the powder to be deoxidised in a preferred temperature range or 1,000°C to 1,200°C. The compact is made substantially fully dense during the sintering step by filling the voids with liquid metal either by infusion or a secondary metal or by sintering at a higher than conventional sintering temperature to bring the temperature above the solidus temperature of the steel.
