A purified and isolated DNA sequence and the encoded mammary-specific secreted protein, mammaglobin, are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for detecting breast cancer based upon the overexpression and secretion of mammaglobin by breast cancer cells. The methods detect and/or quantitate the presence of mammaglobin or the mRNA enconding mammaglobin. Immunotherapy-based methods for treating a breast cancer patient with a mammaglobin-expressing tumor are also disclosed. The methods involve using mammaglobin antigens to induce a humoral and/or cell-mediated immune response against the tumor.

L'invention concerne une séquence d'ADN purifiée et isolée et la mammaglobine, protéine codée spécifique aux tumeurs mammaires. L'invention concerne également des procédés relatifs à la détection du cancer du sein suite à une surexpression et à une sécrétion de mammaglobine par les cellules cancéreuses de la tumeur mammaire. Ces procédés permettent de déceler et/ou de quantifier la présence de la mammaglobine ou de l'ARNm codant ladite mammaglobine. L'invention concerne en outre des procédés relatifs au traitement d'une personne souffrant d'un cancer du sein, qui présente une tumeur à expression de mammaglobine. Les procédés considérés consistent à utiliser des antigènes de la mammaglobine pour induire une réponse immunitaire humorale et/ou à médiation cellulaire vis-à-vis de la tumeur.
