ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Heavy petroleum stock is selectively vaporized in contact with a hot inert solid, resulting in a combustible deposit on the solid which contains vanadium and nickel. The combustible deposit is burned in air. Vanadium is recovered from the solid as a water soluble compound through water leaching. The leached solid is then returned to selective vaporization service.
