A method on managing a multicasting network includes constraining traffic to the path through the rendezvous point. Multicast sources are required to send a request to a multicast administrator for permission to stream data on the network. Once permission is granted the multicast administrator applies a permit filter to the rendezvous point. The permit filter allows the traffic from the requesting source to pass along the path to the receivers. The permit filter includes parameters such as start time and duration for the data steaming to take place. In this manner the multicasting administrator is able to maintain the network in a state of readiness for multicasting, while controlling the sources of such data.
