ABSTRACT A lithium manganese oxide compound Li2O.yMnO2 is provided in which y is >5 and the Mn cations are tetravalent. The compound, when coupled with lithium in an electrochemical cell provides an open circuit voltage of <3,5V. It is made by reacting together Li2O.yMnO2 reagent in which 2,5?y?4 and having a spinel-type structure with a manganese oxide reagent selected from A-Mno2 and electrolytically or chemically prepared manganese dioxide by mixing in finely divided form (?250µm) and heating to 150-450°C for >8 hours. The invention also provides an electrochemical cell having a lithium anode coupled by an electrolyte to a cathode which is said lithium manganese compound Li2O.yMnO2 in which y>5 and provides the open circuit voltage of <3,5V when coupled with lithium.
