ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel manganese steels and processes for preparing same are provided herein. Specifically, such a manganese steel consists essentially of, apart from impurities, 11.8 - 13.5% by weight manganese, 2.0 - 6.0% by weight molybdenum, 0.002 - 0.2% by weight carbon, and optionally one or more of silicon (up to 0.4% by weight), sulphur (up to 0.02% by weight), and phosphorus (up to 0.03% by weight), and balance from. The process involves the step of, after melting of subjecting the steel to an initial solution treatment within a temperature range of 800° to 1100°C, and thereafter cooling the steel to room temperature. The steels provided high strength iron-manganese based maraging-type steels combining high strength and toughness.
