A manhole cover securing and locking system is disclosed by which a manhole cover (3) may be secured and locked to a corresponding manhole frame (2) so as to prevent unintended removal of the cover while permitting the intended removal. The locking system comprises a spring member (5) which at one end is attached to or made unitary with the underside of the cover (3) and at its other, free end has a nose or similar protruding part (6) intended to engage under an inwardly protruding frame rim (7) when the cover is positioned in its covering position. The spring member (5) is substantially in the form of a "U" or a "V" the limbs of which extend substantially at right angles to the periphery of the cover. Beads or similar protrusions (9) are provided on the inner wall of the frame below the frame rim (7) to engage with the spring member nose (5) and prevent rotation of the cover in the frame.
