2075944 9210827 PCTABS00013 A manual type braille writer (10) that provides for both writing and reading in a normal left-to-right manner. In the preferred form, this braille writer (10) has a clip board base (12) with a vertically fixable guide plate assembly (24). The guide plate (24) is provided with a lower portion (30) having rows of character cells (36), each cell typically made of six appropriately spaced pins, hinged to an upper portion (32) having rows of rosette-shaped cutouts aligned with the cells of the lower portion (30). A sheet of paper (16') positioned on the base (12) may be passed between the upper and lower portions (32, 30) of the guide plate (24). A stylus with a recessed end may pass through the cutout of the upper portion (32) and press the paper (16') over a pin on the lower portion (30) to produce a braille dot.
