ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A log splitting device comprises a wedge having an impact head and a tip for placing on a log. A hammer arranged to strike the impact head has a large mass relative to the wedge. A pair of longitudinal guides attached to the sides of the hammer and the wedge guide the hammer member along a longitudinal path coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the wedge shaped member. Handle means are connected to the hammer to enable a user to reciprocate the hammer along the guide path so that it repeatedly strikes the impact head of the wedge and thereby drives the wedge into the log. The device provides an efficient means of manually splitting logs.
