Disclosed is a manually actuated strapping unit for wrapping a tightening strap around a packaged item, which unit has a base plate which is provided with a supporting surface for arranging on a packaged item. The unit has a sealing device with which two strap layers can be connected permanently to each other and it is provided with a tensioning device with which a strap tension can be applied to the tightening strap, the tensioning device having a manually actuated tensioning lever with which a tensioning wheel arranged on a tensioning shaft can be actuated. The unit has a separating means with which the strap can be severed, and an axial coupling is provided in a force flux from the tensioning lever to the tensioning wheel.
