MANUALLY-OPERATED SPRAY APPLICATOR ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A manually operated spray applicator for discharging a coating fluid, and particularly a viscous coating fluid such as plaster or other texturizing surface coating fluids, is comprised of a receiving chamber having an inlet port for admitting a quantity of fluid thereto and an outlet port for discharging a spray of a portion thereof under the influence of a jet of pressurized air issuing slightly upstream thereof and created upon the manual stroke of an air-compression piston; a closed compression chamber isolated from the receiving chamber and having sidewalls and opposed end walls for receipt of an air-compression piston which develops a pressure head within the compression chamber upon a manual stroke thereof; and a stroke-responsive sealing stem having a central airway with an airjet orifice in regis- tration with the discharge area of the outlet port, which airway is is communication with the compression chamber; wherein the sealing stem is adjustably reciprocable along a line from a biased sealing position closing the outlet port at the beginning of a stroke on the piston, to a retracted spray discharge position with the airjet removed to a preselected position slightly upstream from the outlet port during inter- mediate travel of the piston, and further wherein the sealing stem returns to its sealing position prior to the completion of that stroke. Accordingly, whereas pressurized air may issue through the central airway in the sealing stem during the full extent of the stroke on the pressurizing piston, the discharge port is sealed against spray of coating fluid at both the beginning and the end of the each such stroke.
