A manually rechargeable flashlight comprising a main housing. At least one light emitting diode is mounted on the main housing. There is at least one capacitor or rechargeable battery for storing electrical energy and supplying the electrical energy to the at least one light emitting diode. There is also a switch for turning on and off the least one light emitting diode. An electrical generator is for generating electrical current to store in the at least one capacitor or rechargeable battery. The electrical generator has a rotatable mechanical input and an electrical output. There is at least one planetary gear assembly having an input and an output, wherein the output of the least one planetary gear assembly is connected to the rotatable mechanical input of the electrical generator for rotation therewith. A handle is connected to the input of the least one planetary gear for rotation therewith.
