Abstract of the disclosure This invention discloses a method of producing directly esterified fatty acyl isethionate having a yellowness index less than 6Ø A fatty acid is reacted with an alkali metal isethionate in the presence of a catalyst comprising a zinc salt of an organic sulphonic acid or a mixture of ZnO and an organic sulphonic acid. The molar ratio of ZnO to organic sulphonic acid is about 1:2 or less.
