Abstract of the Disclosure: Manufacture of catalyst carriers by applying to thin-walled, skeletal, alumina-containing refractories a slurry including, for example, activated alumina, water, and from about 1 to 5 percent, based on the weight of activated alumina, of crystalline cellulose aggregates having particles which are less than 30 microns in largest size and an average particles size of less than 10 microns; and thereafter drying and calcining the same whereby the refractories are provided with tenaciously bonded coating having large surface areas.
