ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides an improved process and apparatus used for the manufacture of a continuous sheet or film of plastic material on a calender having at least two rolls, wherein a stripping roll(s), spaced apart from the calender roll and rotated in the same direction, is used to remove the finished sheet or film from the calender after it has passed through the final nip of said calender, and the film or sheet is cooled to ambient temperature while being conveyed to a receiving station. The novel stripping method and apparatus of this invention, in respect to the rotational direction, positioning and purpose of the stripping rolls, allows the removal of the finished film or sheet from the calender wherein said film or sheet has a predetermined degree of residual strain such that it enables control of strain at higher calender speeds with higher degrees of stretch of the calendered sheet on the stripper rolls than has been possible with the prior art stripping techniques.
