ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A process in which purified iron oxide in the form of pellets bonded with an organic binder and which may have been partially reduced, are heated in a reducing atmosphere to form sponge pellets and while at rolling temperature the sponge pellets are hot rolled in a rolling mill to form strip or similar elongate workpiece. The apparatus comprises a reactor in which the iron oxide pellets are reduced in a hot reducing atmosphere, a rolling mill and means providing a path from the reactor to the gap between the rolls of the rolling mill. - 1 -
