A process of making filled paper comprising the steps of providing a thick stock cellulosic suspension that contains mechanical pulp and filler, diluting the thick stock suspension to form a thin stock suspension, in which the filler is present in the thin stock suspension in an amount of at least 10% by weight based on dry weight of thin stock suspension, flocculating the thick stock suspension and/or the thin stock using a polymeric retention/drainage system, draining the thin stock suspension on a screen to form a sheet and then drying the sheet, in which the polymeric retention/drainage system comprises, i) a water-soluble branched anionic polymer and ii)a water-soluble cationic or amphoteric polymer. The process is particularly suitable for making filled mechanical grade paper, such as SC grade paper. The process enables the separation of retention and drainage parameters, especially useful for fast draining paper machines, such as Gapformers.

L'invention concerne un procédé destiné à la fabrication de papier chargé, comprenant les étapes de fourniture d'une suspension épaisse de pâte de cellulose contenant de la pâte mécanique et une charge, de dilution de la suspension épaisse de pâte pour former une suspension fine de pâte, la concentration de la charge dans la suspension fine de pâte étant d'au moins 10% en poids sur la base du poids à sec de la suspension fine de pâte, de floculation de la suspension épaisse de pâte et/ou de la suspension fine de pâte à l'aide d'un système de drainage/rétention polymère, de drainage de la suspension fine de pâte sur un tamis pour former une feuille, puis de séchage de la feuille. Le système de drainage/rétention polymère comprend, i) un polymère anionique ramifié soluble dans l'eau et ii) un polyère amphotère ou cationique soluble dans l'eau. Le procédé convient particulièrement bien à la fabrication de papier de catégorie mécanique chargé, tel que du papier de catégorie SC (satiné). Le procédé permet de séparer les paramètres de rétention et de drainage, ce qui est particulièrement utile pour des machines à papier à drainage rapide, telles que les machines de type Gapformers.
