O.Z. 28,910 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A process for the manufacture of hydrocarbon oils by hydrocracking of coal under pressure, more specifically a process for the manufacture of coal oils by hydrocracking of coal under pressure, in 2 stages, in which, in a first stage, finely ground coal is treated with catalysts and oil to give a paste and is converted with hydrogen, at an elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure, at least partially into distillable products (this reaction being carried out in the liquid phase), whilst in a second stage the hydrogenation is taken further, over a fixed catalyst (this stage being carried out in the gas phase or a mixed phase). The object is to increase the throughput in the liquid phase and enable this stage to be carried out at relatively low pressures, of from 100 to 300 bars, to make it possible to carry out the further hydrogenation in the gas phase by utilizing the latent heat of the product from the liquid phase, and to obtain the non-utilizable residue of the products in a clean form.
