ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to the manufacture of insoluble and only slightly water-swellable polymers or copolymers of N-vinyl lactams by polymerization in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of sulfur compounds having a functionality of less than 6. These polymers and copolymers are obtained in the form of very fine granules showing good adsorptivity and good filtering properties.
