A B S T R A C T Mineral insulated cable is manufactured as a continuous operation by continuously feeding a metallic tape and at least one metallic conductor rod substantially vertically downwards, folding the advancing metallic tape transversely around the advancing conductor rod or rods until the longitudinal edges of the tape abut to form a sheath tube and introducing a free flowing mineral insulating powder between the conductor rod or rods and the tube. The abutting longitudinal edges of the advancing folded metallic tape are welded or otherwise permanently secured together and the sheath tube so formed is drawn substantially vertically downwards through means by which the tube is reduced in diameter during its downward passage. The conductor rod or rods is or are maintained positively spaced from the tube in a substantially horizontal plane spaced above the tube- reducing means and the powder is introduced at a rate such as to maintain the part of the tube between the tube-reducing means and said substantially horizontal plane substantially full of powder and to maintain the column of powder above the tube-reducing means at a height at least sufficient to avoid "push-back" of powder.
