A B S T R A C T A mineral insulated cable is manufactured as a continuous operation by introducing a free flowing mineral insulating powder into a metal tube surrounding at least one conductor rod and drawing the metal tube containing the conductor rod or rods separated from the tube, and where there is more than one conductor rod from one another, by mineral insulating powder substantially vertically downward through means by which the tube is reduced in diameter during its downward passage. The or each conductor rod is maintained positively spaced from the tube in a aubstantially horizontal plane spaced above the tube-reducing means and the powder is introduced at a rate such as to maintain the part of the tube between the tube-reducing means and said substantially horizontal plan substantially full of powder and to maintain the column of powder above the tube- reducing means at a height at least sufficient to avoid "push- back" of powder. The mineral insulated cable emerging from the tube-reducing means passes directly in the direction of its length through an annealing apparatus and the annealed mineral insulated cable emerging from the annealing apparatus passes through at least one reducing device which reduces the transverse cross-section of the advancing cable.
